Bet-at-home closes UK after license suspension

bet at home license suspended uk

A few days after Bet-at-home UK got her license suspended it announced that they will withdraw from the UK market. All UK customers of Bet-at-home received a message. This message told the customers that is has not been possible to bet or play casino games since 6th July 2022.

Bet-at-home took this decision after it got an official notification from the UK Gambling Commission. This notification noted that their UK license got suspended starting on 7th July. The main reason of the suspension of the license is a lack of social responsibility and a lack of decent anti money laundering tools.

The UK Gambling commission gave Bet-at-home a chance to improve the anti money laundring tools and lack of social responsibility. And told them they could get a new review in order to keep their license. But Bet-at-home UK decided to close the full operation in the UK.

When we look at the Bet-at-home UK website we see the fllowing statement. “We decided to exit the UK market after our license got suspended, hereby we decide to surrender the license granted by the UKGC”

What to do for Bet-at-home UK players?

Players at Bet-at-home UK can still login to their accounts. You can login but you are not able to place any bets or play casino games. This came in force on 6th July around 16:00. After the suspension of the license Bet-at-home UK closed the possibility to register for UK players.

Straight after registrations closed Bet-at-home decided to close its Affiliate programme in the UK. Their affiliate programme was one of the main marketing channels for Bet-at-home in the UK. Accounts stay open for all players till 30 September. That means you can withdraw your money from your account. If you forget to withdraw the money before 30 September you can contact customer support and request a late payout. This is possible till 30 June 2023.

Bet-at-home decided to transfer all remaining funds in player accounts to charity. It will transfer all funds to Gambling Harm. Which is ofcourse a nice gesture from the betting company.

Social Responsibility and Anti Money Laundring

The UK Gambling Commission is one of the strictest commissions around. It has a lot of rules and restrictions for operators and advertisers. It has a high focus on responsible gaming and it is very strict on anti money laundring tools.

When you are an operator this could be a pain in the ass because it is easy to fail on these points. As an operator it is needed to have at least a few employees fully focussed on social responsibility. You have to offer responsible gambling tools and identify problem gamblers. When you identify them you also have to take action to prevent players from being a problem gambler. It could be very hard to identify those players and when you do they often don’t react or they don’t want to be helped. And when one of those players starts complaining after a big loss it is your fault as an operator. You get a note that your social responsibility is not good enough.

It is a bit the same with anti money laundring. In the past online casinos where used a lot for money laundring. Transferring drugs money to an account, play a few games and withdraw it to a normal bank account. It was something that hapened on a daily base. The UKGC is very strict to prevent this kind of criminal behaviour. As an operator you need to be sharp on all transactions made on your website. You have to keep an eye on suspicious transactions and behaviour. And when you notice it you have to handle.

Bet-at-home UK seem to have failed on both these to important points. And that is the reason why their license got suspended.

Why didn’t Bet-at-home UK made the needed chances?

The UK Gambling Commission only suspended the license. It did not terminated the bet-at-home license. So why didn’t the company made the needed chances? What is the reason why Bet-at-home did not take the time to fight for their UK license?

I don’t know the exact answer on this question, but I do think it has something to do with the profitability of their operations in the United Kingdom. Since more and more restrictions and rules came in place in the UK it is hard for gambling operators to make a decent profit in the UK. For Bet-at-home UK wasn’t the main geo for their operations. They have more focus on countries like Germany and Austria.

On top of that the company revealed a huge drop in their revenues in May. In an official report bet-at-home announced a drop of more than 50% in revenues in Q1. The main reasons for this drop are changes in regulations in Austria, Germany and the Netherlands. These markets are main markets for the company, but changes in regulations forced Bet-at-home to stop in Netherlands and close their casino in Germany.

Will Bet-at-home come back in the UK?

No, they won’t come back because they decided to surrender their license by the UKGC. That means they don’t have a license anymore and they won’t apply for a new one either.
