Standings Group A
In Group A the national squads of Russia, Egypt, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia will compete for a spot at the last 16. During the first match Russia destroyed Saudi Arabia with 5 against 0. Although this is the case most people expect Uruguay and Egypt to continue to the next round. Or will the host Russia surprise the world and book even more great results? We will need to wait till 19 June for Russia next match against Egypt. This will probably decide witch national team will become second in Group A.
Standings Group B
Group B is filled with some very interesting teams; Portugal, Spain, Morocco and Iran. Portugal is the current European Champion and Morocco won the African Cup. In addition to that Spain won the World Cup in 2010. During the first round of matches, taking place on 15 June, Portugal will face Spain and Morocco will play Iran. Both games are very important since Spain and Portugal are long-time rivals and Iran and Morocco both could really use some first point in order to stay in the race for an unexpected place two in the group.
Standings Group C
In Group C we find the national teams of France, Australia, Peru and Denmark. France is the favourite to become number one in this group and it is even a favourite to win the World Cup. Why? France has a very talented and young squad with experienced players like Pogba, Griezman and Mbappe. The second place in Group C will probably go to Peru or Denmark. Or will the Socceroos surprise everyone and continue to the last 16? We have to wait until Jun 26 until Group C plays it last matched; Australia – Peru and Denmark – France.
Standings Group D
In Group D we find the national squads of Argentina, Iceland, Croatia and Nigeria. In this group Argentina is the favourite to end first. The race for the second place will be very exciting and will probably go between Croatia and Nigeria. But in the end we think Croatia will win because of the fact they have a better squad with players like Modric and Rakitic. Iceland is the underdog in Group D and many expect them to leave the tournament after the group stage. Group D plays its last matches on June 26 in St Petersburg (Nigeria – Argentina) and Rostov-On-Don (Iceland – Croatia).
Standings Group E
In Group E Brazil, Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia will compete for a place at the last 16. The top favourite for the first place in this group is Brazil. They simply have a great track record and a very strong squad. The battle for the second place in this group will be more interesting. We expect this battle will be fought by Switzerland and Serbia. Because of this the matches between Serbia and Switzerland (June 22) and Switzerland against Costa Rica (June 27) will be very important.
Standings Group F
Group F is filled with the national squads of Germany, Mexico, Sweden and the Korea Republic. Most people expect Germany to become number one since they have a great squad and are the current World Cup holder. The battle for the second place will probably be more exciting and go between Mexico and Sweden. We expect Mexico to continue but in order to do this they must win the match against Sweden on June 27 in the Ekaterinburg Arena in Ekaterinburg. The Korea Republic is expected to leave the World Cup after the group stage.
Standings Group G
In Group G we will find the national teams of Belgium, Panama, Tunisia and England. England and Belgium are the top contenders for the place 1 and 2 within this group. Panama and Tunisia are expected to leave the tournament after the first round but you never know. Maybe one of these countries will surprise us and take the second place? Group G will play its first match on June 18, Belgium – Panama and Tunisia – England.
Standings Group H
The last and final group, Group H, might be one of the weakest groups during the World Cup Group Stage. In Group H we find the national squads of Poland, Senegal, Colombia and Japan. We expect Poland and Japan to continue to the last 16, but it can really go every direction. It really depends on which teams is in good shape, and which team can handle the flight schedule the best. Group H plays its first match on June 19, Colombia – Japan and Poland – Senegal.
