PARCOURS WEEK 1; TOUR DE FRANCE 2018

During the first day of the Tour de France the peloton will start on the island Île de Noirmoutier. From this point the peloton will travel to the mainland over one of the bridges since the feared Passage du Gois has a bad reputation for being too slippery. During the Tour de France of 1991 half of the peloton crashed because of the risky roads. After arriving on the mainland the peloton will ride to Fontenay-le-Comte for probably a mass sprint. The winner of this sprint will be in the yellow jersey next day.

During the second day the peloton will travel from Mouilleron-Saint-Germain to La Roche-sur-Yon. This is a fairly flat stage which means it is perfect for the sprinters again. After this stage there will be a team time trial on the schedule. This time trial lasts for 35 kilometres in and around Cholet. During this stage the riders will experience a flat terrain with a few small hills with a gradient of 5% maximum. This stage might be perfect for the better time trial riders like Dumoulin (Sunweb), Froome (Sky) and Tony Martin (Katusha-Alpecin).

Day four starts near the coast of France at a place called La Baule. From this place the peloton will ride to Sarzeau. During this ride they will experience a lot of flat terrain and some false flat. During the next day (Stage 5) the peloton will have to conquer some fairly small hills with a gradient up to 4,8%. Stage 6 will be more challenging because of a double climb up the steep Mûr-de-Bretagne.

At the end of Week 1 the Tour de France will leave Bretagne with two stages (7 and 8) which offers chances for the sprinters of the peloton. A few candidates for winning these stages are Kittel, Groenewegen, Kristoff, Greipel, Sagan and Cavendish. After these two stages the peloton will travel from Arras to Roubaix which will be a challenging stage because of the many kilometres of cobblestones. One of the favourites for this stage is Tony Martin since he won this stage in 2015. For the yellow jersey this will be an exciting stage since it’s not uncommon to crash or puncture a tire on these tricky roads.

PARCOURS WEEK 2; TOUR DE FRANCE 2018

After a day of rest the peloton will continue their journey from with a ride from Annecy to Le Grand-Bornand. During this stage they will encounter the Col de la Croix Fry, Montée du Plateau des Gières, Col de Romme en Col de la Colombière and a long descent. Once this is done they will travel the next day from Albertville to the place Rosière, which is a popular ski-resort. To get over the finish the riders must complete three respectable climbs and a 18 kilometre absent to the finish line, which will ensure some excitement.

Stage 12 will take the riders from the Col de la Madeleine and the Col de la Croix de Fer to the L’Alpe d’Huez. During this stage the riders need to absent around 65+ kilometre with a total of 5.000 meters in height. We expect that this stage will get multiple riders in trouble.

The following stages will be more relaxed for the riders. We think both stage 13 and 14 will be one for the sprinters or riders that go on an adventure early during the race. The last stage of the week (15) will take the riders to Carcassonne while enjoying a 30 kilometre long descent.

During Week 2 the riders will encounter the L’Alpe d’Huez.

During Week 2 the riders will encounter the L’Alpe d’Huez.

PARCOURS WEEK 3; TOUR DE FRANCE 2018

During the last week of the Tour DE France 2018 the peloton will need to face three stages in the Pyrenees. During stage 16 the riders will finish (descent) in Bagnères-de-Luchon after climbing three steep hills in 70 kilometres. The next day will offer the peloton a short ride of 65 kilometres, but 38 kilometres of these are going up. This exciting stage will finish on the Col de Portet, after a steep 16 kilometre climb with a maximum gradient of 8,7%.

After these heavy stages the sprinters might get another chances during stage 18. This stage is fairly flat and finishes in Pau. Stage 19 will be another day for the climbers and the riders who are riding for the overall victory. During the stage the riders will travel from Aspin, Tourmalet, Aubisque to Laruns. During these iconic cols the riders will experience a total absent of 4.800 metres. The etappe will end with a 20 milometer descent which might be perfect for some of the absent-specialists.

The day before the finish in Paris the riders will face an individual time trial over 31 kilometres in the France part of the Basque Country. This stage will be perfect for Tom Dumoulin to win a stage and maybe to gain time on the other competitors for the overall standings.

Just like always the Tour de France will finish on the Champs-Élysées in Paris. This stage will start in Houilles and will last 116 kilometres with mainly flat terrain. One of the top favourites to win this stage is Dylan Groenewegen since he won this stage in 2017.
