Countries with the Biggest Gamblers
On this page we are going to have a closer look at the countries with the biggest gamblers. We are focussing on online gambling. When we define “Biggest” gamblers we don’t mean the physical size of a gambler. We look at a number of factors which determine the “size” of online gambling of citizens in various countries. Factors are net spend, loss per citizen and the number of active gamblers.
More and more countries are regulating online gambling. This does not always mean the spend on online gambling increases. At the moment the biggest markets are still the grey markets and black markets. Markets with no regulation or not so strict regulations have the biggest gamblers. Regulations could decrease the amount of gamblers and the total spend in a country. An example is Germany. Germany got some new regulations in 2021. These regulations scared both casinos and gamblers.
When we look at countries with the biggest gamblers we see countries with a lot of small gamblers but also countries with a small group of gamblers who have a higher spend per player.
Biggest Gamblers – What do we mean with “The Biggest”?
It is very hard to determine what “the biggest gamblers” are. You can look at this defenition in many different ways. A few of them are:
- How much money is bet per person in a country?
- How much is the total bet in a country?
- What is the average loss per person?
- How much is lost by a country?
- How high is the wagering per person or country?
A country with a lot of gamblers is not automatically the country with the biggest gamblers. In the United Kingdom we find the highest number of gamblers. But the majority of these gamblers is under 21. A lot of people are gambling in the United Kingdom but they play with relative low amounts of money. The gamblers in the United Kingdom are “small” gamblers when we look at net spendings per active gambler.
When we look at a country which has lost most money with gambling, we have to look at Australia, Singapore and Ireland. Australia and Singapore are by far the biggest losers in the world. In Australia the losses are around €1100 per person. If we look at the biggest losers per country United States is the biggest. But that makes sense if we look at the number of people living in the United States.
It is very hard to determine the country with the biggest gamblers. But if I have to give my opinion I would say Australia, Singapore, Ireland and Canada the biggest group of gamblers that spend large sums of money on online gambling.
Biggest Gamblers – Per Person – Loss & Bets
As a gambler you can bet a million on a day. Or you can bet €1 a million times. A player winning a lot could be a big gambler. But you can also be a big player when you lose a lot. When are you a bigger gambler? This is very hard to say. You could look at the money lost per person. In my opinion it is not the ideal way to find out if a certain country has the biggest gamblers.
Although it is not the ideal way to determine if a country is big on gambling, it is still good to have a closer look at the amount of money lost per head. It giives you a better view on the market value of a certain country
- Australia –> €1100
- Singapore –> €1050
- Ireland –> €520
- Canada –> €510
- Finland –> €495
As you can see Australians and players from Singapore are losing double the amount of money than the Irish, Canadians and Finnish. You could conclude that Australians and people from Singapore are among the biggest gamblers in the world. Or maybe they are among the unluckiest players or players with the worse gambling skills.
Underneath you find the top 10 of most fanatic gambling countries in the world. This is based on the amount lost per person in those countries. China is one of the biggest gambling countries. They are not in this list because their average income is very low and so their spend is not among the highest.

The Netherlands is also not in this top 10 because gambling is officially not legal in this country. Most Dutch players play online but they play at online casinos and bookmakers that are English. If we include the spend in the Netherlands this country would be listed in the Top 5 of countries with the biggest gamblers.
Deposit value per player
Another interesting factor to look at is the value of deposits in a country. Players in countries like Poland, India and Hungary gamble a lot. But they play with relative small sums of money. The average deposit amount in these countries is around €10-€20. When we look at countries like Netherlands, Canada, New Zealand and Finland the average amount per deposit is between €80-€100.
If we look at the biggest gamblers it is good to look at the total deposit amount per head of a country. Canada, Netherlands and New Zealand are by far the biggest countries when we look at these numbers. The Netherlands will only be bigger when the new regulations get in place in 2021.
This is how much is spent on online gambling by the biggest gamblers
We could also look at how much money is spent on online gambling in countries. We are now going to have a look at the overall amount spent in the biggest gambling countries. The overall spent is actually a good indicator. It indicates the love for gambling in a country. On the other side it could also indicate that a certain country has a lot of citizens or a few rich gamblers. It does not indicate that a country has a large amount of online gamblers.
Looking at the total spent on online gambling in a country is a good way get some sense about the gambling behaviour in that country. below you find the countries with the biggest total spent on online gambling in 2020

As you can see the top 5 countries in this list are all countries with a huge amount of citizens. In this list you don’t see the United Kingdom and Canada. this shows that it is important to look at different factors and metrics when you want to find the country with the biggest gamblers.
Number of online Gamblers in a country
If you want to know which country is the biggest gambling nation, you should have a look at the number of online gamblers in a country. Ofcourse this metric is still not perfect but it gives a good view on the popularity of gambling in a certain country. In this metric you find gamblers who participate in lotteries for €1 a month. But you also see gamblers betting thousands of euros a day. It is funny to see how many persons in your country actually gamble each year.
The Nottingham Trent University did some research in Europe. They came up with the following percentages of the population being involved in gambling.
- Netherlands –> 87%
- Italy –> 80%
- Russia –> 75%
- Estonia –> 75%
- Finland –> 74%
- Iceland –> 69%
Biggest online casino countries and players
Together with online investigation office H2 Gambling Capital we tested how much an average grown up spends on online gamling each year. This includes online casino gaming and sportsbetting, bingo, loteries and horse racing bets. The total count worldwide of losses in 2019 was 363.000.000.000 Euro. A huge amount of money and a big jackpot.
And Australia is on top of this list when you look at how much each person gambles online. On average each Australian grown up spent €932 on online casino gambling, sportsbetting and loteries. And that is almost 40% more than number two Singapore. In Singapore they lost €660 per person. In total Australia lost 17.2 billion euros on online gambling in 2016.
